Upgrading Draytek router

14 06 2012

Came across an interesting issue with Draytek routers that I’d not encountered before during an attempted firmware upgrade yesterday.

A great thing about Draytek is the ease of finding and downloading firmware for the devices.. The download links pretty much all sit on a page of their website that’s easily found with a Google search.

Downloaded the latest version for the device in question, unzipped, and tried to install during a planned window, but got an error message about an invalid file name.

This happened from two different machines. A bit of digging turned up the fact that upgrades must be carried out using Internet Explorer, not Firefox (and, I’d hazard a guess, not Chrome or Safari either!). Another IE specific web UI!

Console access on Dell switches

11 06 2012

As much as I’d prefer for them to be Cisco, some of the switches in HQ are Dell Managed switches. I’ve not really had much experience with them, but as we’re stuck with them for at least another 6 months, I thought I’d take a look, see if I could learn something about them.
First thing that struck me is how similar the command language is – admittedly it’s not as polished though! I’ll post further observations once I get a chance to have a proper look, just wanted to note that a null model cable is required as a console cable – I spent £10 on one from Maplins, as I was in a hurry, but they’re available much cheaper on Amazon.

Catalyst 3750 switch stacking commands

15 05 2012

Installed my 3750 stack recently, and thought I’d record some useful diagnostics commands.

switch#show switch

Shows the members of the stack, their respective MAC addresses and their priority. A higher priority number is better.

switch#show switch stack-ports

Shows the status of the stacking ports. I used this, in combination with swapping cables to diagnose a faulty stacking port on a reconditioned 3750 I purchased.

#show switch stack-ports summary

Shows Port status, cable lengths, link statuses.

#show switch stack-ring speed

Another useful one to verify that stacking cables and ports are working correctly. If there are two cables between switches in a two switch stack, they should be running at 32G / “Full”.
