iPad 2 hurry up!

21 04 2011

Decided on a whim that I wanted an iPad 2. This mainly stemmed from the fact that my Iphone 4 doesn’t render the tabular data in the the e-book versions of my learning materials very well, but I’ve also now decided to stick my CBT videos on there too.

The Apple Online store was saying 2 weeks for delivery; the local Apple Store were “getting deliveries daily, call at 9:00 every day to see if we have one” (bollo**s to that), and some joker is selling the 16GB WiFi model, with a retail of £399.99, for £515.99. So I’d almost given up when I checked out PC World, who had them available for delivery in 2-3 days. Thinking this may have been an error I phoned to verify, and had it confirmed that this is indeed the delivery time.

So now I’m sitting at work waiting for DHL to get here – hopefully I won’t have the negative experience of them that several of my colleagues have. Gulp.

Exam pass

4 02 2011

Well, I passed the 70-648! Really happy about it, especially given that I compressed in to quite a short space of time.

There were two sections to the exam, with around 30 questions in each – first questions from the 70-640 and then from the 70-642.

Each half has to be completed in a certain amount of time, during which you can review answers as with all MS exams. Once you’ve moved to the next exam though, you’re unable to go back.

The first exam was very certificates focussed, but on reflection, I wasn’t sure if this was due to adaptive testing giving me a more than natural amount of certificates questions due to getting them wrong!

Absolutely smashed the subnetting questions, thanks to the CCNA study. Now back to the 70-662! Gulp.

Just brought *a lot* of my network down..

27 08 2010

.. by changing the port mode of a Cisco switch that was connected to a Dell switch to trunk mode from access.. fixed immediately by restoring the port config from backup (gotta love right-click to Paste in Tera Term ha ha).

Restored the port config from backup and everything was working again very quickly.. this is what 19:00 on a Friday (non working hours) is all about! Hehe. Only problem is, not got a serial cable to hand to connect to the Dell switch to try to work out the config there.

Needless to say, I’ve asked for budget for Cisco switches to replace the Dells next year ; )

Full write up in the next few days – I was in the middle of a great “walking the network” session to diagnose a duplicate IP, reported by one of my switches to a Kiwi syslog server I’ve set up at the time.

This is exactly what I started this blog for (well, not specifically to break stuff, but to write about my findings when stuff does break, and show how I fixed it) – amazing ; )

Night!

New blog – welcome!

24 08 2010

This is my technology blog. I’ll write about interesting stuff I come across in the course of my job, with the focus, broadly speaking, on Cisco, VMWare, Windows Server, a bit of Linux, and certification.

I’m currently studying for my CCNA, having gone down the two exam route and already passed the CCENT with a 912. I passed the MCSA 2003 a few years ago, so I’ll be upgrading that to current technology soon, but not before tackling the Checkpoint CCSA – a busy boy then.
